Walk past our outdoor science classroom at St. Francis on any given morning, and you might see a three-year-old carefully measuring cups of soil into a mud pie “recipe,” a four-year-old tracing letters in sand with a stick, or a small group huddled around a magnifying glass, debating (loudly, and with great authority) whether the creature they’ve found is a roly-poly or a beetle.

To the untrained eye, it looks like play. To us, it looks like exactly the kind of learning young children need most.

Children trace letters in sand and soil, hunt for objects that start with a target sound, and build vocabulary by naming what they discover: roots, petals, larvae, compost. Rich, real-world language is some of the best phonemic awareness practice there is.
